Dear Parents,
Macon East is proud to extend our Advanced Placement offerings for the 2011-2012 school year to include three new courses; AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, and AP United States History. These new classes will join AP Studio Art 2D which was offered last year. The Advanced Placement classes give our students an opportunity to earn college credit in a challenging classroom environment while still being taught by a Macon East faculty member. Ms. Hughes will be teaching both of the AP English classes, while I will be teaching the AP US History class. Additionally, these classes increase the school’s overall profile to colleges and universities making our students more competitive for admission.
The Advanced Placement courses offered at Macon East are meant to replicate an English or US History course offered at a college or university. Students in these classes, who successfully pass the AP exam administered in May, 2012, will receive college credit for that class. Additionally, this is a weighted class that will add one (1) quality point to the normal 4.0 scale, therefore an A is worth 5 quality points, a B with 4, and so on. In keeping with the replication of a college class, we are requiring the students to purchase the textbooks used in these classes. This textbook will be theirs to keep and use as they see fit (highlight, underline, etc.) with no penalty for a damaged book at the end of the year. Furthermore, the purchase of this textbook will allow our students to have the most up to date textbook available from the publisher. Feel free to use any method you wish to acquire this book (Amazon, half.com, etc.). The book title for the US History class is The American Pageant, 14th Edition by David Kennedy, Lizabeth Cohen, and Thomas Bailey. The ISBN # is 9780547166544. Information for the AP English classes (AP Comp for 11th grade and AP Lit for 12th grade) is enclosed.
AP US History Students,
Prior to the first day of class, you will be expected to have read chapter 1 “New World Beginnings” pages 4-26. There will be a quiz on the first day of class on this material.
AP English Students,
Please review the enclosed information regarding your particular class.
Thank you and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Mike Petite
Headmaster
