MACON EAST TWO - A - DAYS

Macon-East senior football players Cole Pinkston and David Smith know each other better than most high school teammates.
The two met when they began attending the school at age 3.
They started playing football together at age 5 and have been on several different teams going through the YMCA ranks, including Termite and Pee Wee divisions, and later on with the Knights' junior varsity and varsity teams.
"It's awesome being able to play together and be out there with him," Smith said, "I know what he is good at and what he is bad at. "I help him and he helps me."
The two anchor the right side of the Knights' offensive line with Pinkston, at 5-foot-8, 210 pounds playing guard, and Smith, at 6-foot-2, 265 pounds.
But both prefer playing defense with Smith at tackle and Pinkston at linebacker.
"David is obviously huge," Pinkston said. "He's extremely hard to block, and he's not slow at the same time. He's a really good offensive player, but he's a better defensive player. He can make tackles and can read the offense very well."
Smith also praises Pinkston's defensive ability.
"He's really good linebacker reads the plays well and can tackle," Smith said. "He's the best tackler on the team."
That doesn't mean he's immune from getting his bell rung. During a preseason practice, Pinkston missed a week of drills after suffering a concussion on a hard hit.
"I hit head on with Hunter Smith and collided pretty hard," Pinkston said. "It knocked me pretty crazy."
Pinkston and Smith are not sure if their run of playing together will continue.
Pinkston, who would like to become a veterinarian, has received some interest from Huntingdon, Birmingham-Southern and Faulkner. Smith, who intends to go into coaching and physical education, is not sure if he will attempt to play college football.
But both are excited about getting their senior years started.
"We've been looking better in practice than I thought we would be," Smith said. "We have a lot of new players that are going to contribute. We have been figuring out a lot of things that we didn't know.
"I'm looking forward to see how we will go up against the better teams. I think we will surprise a lot of people this year."
Macon East's first game is Aug. 26 at Monroe Academy. Monroe won last season 43-2.
"We started practice thinking about them," Pinkston said. "They beat us pretty bad, and we're looking for revenge. I can't wait to get started."
